Founded by the Jat ruler Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733, the city was the capital of the Jat kingdom. It is said that the rulers of the city were Yadavas, who are considered to be the decedents of Lord Krishna. This simply brings the city on the forefront in terms of culture, as it is the city that belonged to the decedents of the almighty. Hinduism is the chief religion in the city, and the calendars are filled with numerous Hindu celebrations and festivals. Of these the most celebrated festivals include: Gaurav Mahamna (also known as Brij Mahotsav), Dussehra, Jaswant Exhibition, Gangaur, Holi, and Teej. Other than the indigenous Hindu rulers, the city also came under the reign of the Mughals and the British. But, it is under the rule of the Jat rulers, the city actually prospered. The city was once popular for being impregnable. There exists a grandiose fort known as Lohgarh Fort. True to its name which means an Iron fort, the fort survived multiple Mughal and British attacks, and still stands tall as a pride of Bharatpur.

Other than the Lohgarh fort, there are several other palaces, forts, and old testaments in the city. In fact, the city is the one of the best exhibits of the state's glorious past. Fateh Burj, Jawahar Burj, Kishori Mahal, Rajput Palace, Moti Mahal, Ganga Mandir, Laxmi Vilas Palace, and Laxman Mandir are some of the other old yet magnificent testaments that one should visit when in the city.
